Three weeks after Maduro's capture, US appoints new charge d'affaires

The United States has appointed a new charge d'affaires for Venezuela, a diplomatic source told US media, in a sign of new relations between Caracas and Washington following the capture of President Nicolas Maduro by the US military.

The website of the US embassy in Venezuela now lists Laura F. Dogu, the former ambassador to Nicaragua, as charge d'affaires in Caracas.

Diplomatic relations between Venezuela and the US have been severed since 2019, but the two countries have begun intensive political relations since the fall of Maduro.

The new charge d'affaires will serve in Venezuela, whose long-time leader, Nicolas Maduro, was captured by a US military operation on January 3./CNA
