Ukraine without power in the middle of winter due to Russian attacks/ Pope Leo

At Sunday Mass at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV called on people to pray for peace in Ukraine, as the country faces severe cold conditions following attacks by Russia that have hit the energy sector.

"Ukraine is being hit by continuous attacks, leaving entire populations exposed to the winter cold. I am following the situation with sadness, I am close to those who suffer and I pray for them. The continuation of hostilities, with increasingly serious consequences for civilians, deepens the division between peoples and pushes even further away the possibility of a just and lasting peace. I invite everyone to intensify efforts to end this war," the Pope said.

Kiev, a city of about 3 million people, is dominated by apartment buildings, many from the Soviet era, which are now left without electricity for most of the day.

In this fourth winter of war, electricity is a rationed commodity.

Residents plan their lives around electricity schedules: when to cook, shower, charge phones and run washing machines. Food is sorted by expiration date, water is filtered into bottles and stored in buckets, while small gas cylinders are used to heat soup or tea when the power goes out. /CNA
