Financial Times: Israel will seek a new security agreement with the US

Israel is preparing to enter talks with the Trump administration on a new 10-year security agreement with the United States, with the aim of expanding American military support, according to a report by the Financial Times.

The report notes that the Israeli leadership is planning for a future with less dependence on billions of dollars in US aid, implying that the military aid package of about $3.8 billion a year, which expires in 2028, may not be fully renewed.

Gil Pinchas, who was a senior economic adviser to the Israeli Defense Ministry before leaving office, told the Financial Times that future discussions are expected to emphasize joint military cooperation and joint defense projects, rather than just direct financial assistance. He said the partnership is more important than just the financial aspect and that strategic cooperation has a similar value to money.

Pinchas also mentioned that the $3.3 billion annual direct monetary support that Israel uses to purchase American weapons could be gradually reduced under the new negotiated agreement.

The current security agreement between the US and Israel, signed in 2016, provides for $38 billion in military aid over 10 years, including $5 billion for anti-missile defense systems.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also expressed optimism that Israel will reduce its dependence on American military aid in the next decade.
