UN official: Protests have weakened the regime, but its fall is not guaranteed

Mass protests in Iran have shown a weakened regime, but its fall is not guaranteed, a senior official from the UN Refugee Agency has warned. The demonstrations have spread to several cities and are linked not only to economic issues but also to political grievances that extend beyond traditional discontent groups.

According to him, the regime is perceived as weaker after its inability to defend itself from Israeli and American airstrikes in 2025, and this has further inspired protests in the country.

Demonstrators are facing harsh repression, mass arrests and communication blockades, while the economy is deteriorating due to inflation, a falling currency and rising unemployment.

The official stressed that there is no certainty that the regime will fall, as Iran's internal institutions can withstand pressure longer than some other regional regimes. /CNA
