In just five days, Czech citizens have raised more than $6 million to buy generators, heaters and batteries to send to Ukraine, where Russian attacks on energy infrastructure have left hundreds of thousands of people without heat or electricity.

Ukrainian engineers have been working non-stop in unsafe conditions since Russia escalated its attacks, with temperatures dropping to minus 20 degrees Celsius. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared an energy emergency after the Russian attacks. The European Commission announced on Friday that it would send 447 emergency generators worth €3.7 million.

The darekproputina.cz initiative has been collecting donations for Ukraine since Russia invaded its neighbor in 2022, including campaigns to buy a Blackhawk helicopter and a tank, as well as drones, ammunition and medical supplies worth more than €55 million.

The initiative's latest effort had raised 126 million kronor (about $6.16 million) from 74,745 donors by Wednesday morning, and nearly 15 million kronor more was on the way from donors.

"Over the weekend we reserved two generators (...) for 8 million kronor each that should go to two smaller health institutions ," said initiative organizer Martin Ondracek. /CNA
