The 'burnt' promise: Erion Veliaj and the Tirana incinerator

The Tirana incinerator affair is not only the largest, but also the most corrupt, which unfortunately is being dragged into SPAK's investigations by a prosecutor with the lights 'off'.

A contract that has cost Albanians over 130 million euros, despite the fact that it does not exist.

The Tirana incinerator is a major theft and a paper project, where instead there are tons of garbage, which has brought the situation to the brink of disaster.

It is about an affair, where the arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, is also implicated with evidence.

There are several documents that link Erion Veliaj to the case.

The first document is the one in which Erion Veliaj responds to Alqi Bllako and Lefter Koka, where he agrees to the price of 29 euros/ton for waste.

The second document is the one that lines up the municipal structures for the construction company.

Although it is common for an agreement to be signed between a company that provides services in the waste field and a municipality, in this case Erion Veliaj did not even sign it himself, but instead had his subordinates sign it, who, among other things, also used the seal of the Municipality of Tirana.

CNA has brought several materials and documents about the non-existent Tirana incinerator, an affair that has been an open issue for 5 years.

The report on the Tirana incinerator affair was made in 2021 and now in 2026, a full 5 years have passed since the investigations are leading nowhere. No accountability from the municipality that requested and supervised the construction of the incinerator?!

It seems that the investigation file of this affair is in the hands of prosecutor Dritan Prençi, who has chosen to drag it out endlessly, even 'sleeping' on the file without being influenced by either the opposition's denunciations or media reports or public opinion.

In this case, the main suspect and implicated is an arrested mayor with 13 charges for 5 serious criminal offenses, which raises the question: Why should Erion Veliaj be investigated or imprisoned for the Ajola panties, while he is not being investigated for the incinerator?

To date, determining criminal guilt is the exclusive competence of the courts, while the public debate about such an affair, where hundreds of thousands of euros are taken from citizens, even putting them at risk with a non-existent investment, is mainly related to political responsibility, but also the legal steps that should be taken in the matter.

If the Tirana incinerator issue is not followed to the end, to go directly to Erion Veliaj's actions or inactions regarding this affair, it will never be known what happened and where the hundreds of millions of euros taken from Albanian citizens ended up.

This affair is not only about playing with Albanians' money or the abusive decisions of a mayor, but also with the health of citizens and the risk of an environmental disaster that is at the doorstep of the capital's residents. / CNA
