Changes in the government/ Former Deputy Prime Minister: They deserve a calm

Former Deputy Prime Minister Ermelinda Meksi has commented on the recent moves in the government. In her post on social media, Meksi states that these changes deserve a calm analysis, away from emotional reactions.

She writes that the decisions of SPAK and GJKKO have produced a political effect, but according to her, this does not mean that justice "dictates" the government.

Among other things, it is stated that a government reformation may aim to regain political initiative or be a reflection on government performance.

Full reaction:

The recent changes in government deserve a calm analysis, away from emotional reactions.

For months, the thesis that “powers are separated” and that justice cannot dictate to the executive was articulated. On the other hand, it is undeniable that the decisions of SPAK and GJKKO produced a political effect and led to a reformation of the government cabinet.

But the fact that an investigation brings political consequences does not mean that justice "dictated" the government.

The executive has the constitutional right to change its composition at any time.

A reform of the government may aim to regain political initiative, reflect on government performance, or function in a reality where justice is more active and standards are higher.

The issue is not how many ministers are changed.

The questions that are added are:

Is justice allowed to investigate without hindrance?

Are court decisions respected?

Will legal changes that weaken new institutions be avoided?

From Prime Minister Edi Rama's speech, I would like to highlight what he clearly said:

"We will never interfere in matters that pertain to justice." and "SPAK is not affected, only supported."

But democracy is measured by the example set when power is put to the test.

If even the highest levels of government face investigation without political immunity and without obstruction from the majority, then we have a higher institutional standard than yesterday.

And this is not just a matter of the balance of power.

It is a matter of credibility before the citizens and before the European Union.

Because integration is not just a technical process, but concrete proof of the functioning of the rule of law.

If this standard is maintained and consolidated, then not only is democracy strengthened, but the path towards EU membership is truly accelerated, a promised objective that requires proof.

This is the most crucial issue today. /CNA
