The Central Election Commission decided this Friday to declare Fredi Beler's mandate invalid.

"The mandate of the mayor of Himara is invalid", is the decision of the CEC. 

At today's meeting, Beleri himself was also present, who said that injustice has been done to him. 

"Injustices have been done to me. I had to get today's permit to take the oath. I have to take the oath and then be dismissed, as the Constitution wants. Those who decided to hijack the Himara Municipality and do not want the Himarjots to express themselves should "let them drink the glass of poison until the end. I must swear that my term as mayor is over, but it seems their arrogance to hold the elections in August to join this request. I'm afraid that half of the municipality will go to prison. Ask the Constituent Assembly to solve this once and for all," said Beleri.

Beleri was escorted this morning by prison police forces from Fier prison where he was serving his sentence to the CEC. 

Meanwhile, his lawyer, Klodiana Gjyzari, stated that this is an invalid procedure and that the CEC has no competence to make such a decision. 

The Court against Corruption and Organized Crime decided a few months ago to sentence the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, to two years in prison for active corruption in the elections of May 14, 2023./ CNA
