In 2023, the average salary in the economy reached 70.5 thousand ALL, according to data published by INSTAT. Compared to last year, the average salary has increased by 14%.

A man was paid an average of 72.7 thousand ALL per month, or 14% more than a year ago.

Women continue to be paid less than men. Their average salary in 2023 was 68.2 thousand ALL, or 6.2% less than that of men, at the same levels as the previous year, but worsened compared to 2021, when the salary gap between the two sexes reached the lowest level historical of 4.5%.

Out of 36 groups of professions that INSTAT reports, only in 5 of them, (Administrative and commercial managers; Legislators, senior civil servants of the state administration and executive directors; Workers in electro-technology professions; Service and support workers; Personal service workers and defense) or 14% of the total occupation group, women are paid more than men.

Women managers are paid more
Although in most professions, women receive less than men, there is one category where they always dominate, that of managers, being even the highest paid of all.

According to INSTAT, in the profession group "Administrative and commercial managers", women were paid an average of 201 thousand ALL per month in 2023, with an increase of 16% compared to the previous year. This is the highest paid profession group in the country. Compared to men working in the same profession (188 thousand ALL), female managers are paid 7.2% more.

Even in the state, women are paid more. In the profession group "Legislators, senior officials of the state administration and executive directors", the average monthly salary of women was 108 thousand ALL, or 6% more than that of men in the same category.

Professions with the biggest salary differences
The profession that pays women less than men is industry, with a difference of 16%, due to the physical difficulties of this activity, where men are naturally preferred.

Men in the industry are paid 64,000 Lek per month, compared to 47,000 Lek for women, with the latter being mainly employed in the textile and footwear industry.

Teaching skills in science subjects are valued less among women. The difference in the profession group "Specialists of physical sciences, mathematics and engineering" is 21%, with men being paid 100.3 thousand lek and women around 80 thousand lek per month.

Even in education in general, female teachers are paid 14% less than male teachers.
There is also a high difference in health, with women being paid 84,000 ALL, or 17% less than men.
The greatest equality in wages is in construction (about 46 thousand ALL each) and agriculture (about 45 thousand ALL). /Monitor
