If you have a case of sore throat, it may mean that it is painful to swallow, it feels scratchy and you may even have a mild cough.
But this common winter affliction can have all kinds of causes.

And each type of sore throat will require a different form of treatment.

Sarah Jarvis, general practitioner and clinical consultant for Patient.info, and Dr. Leyla Hannbeck, pharmacist and chief executive of the Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies, told Sun Health that there are three types of sore throat: laryngitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis.

According to the doctor, all three types can cause pain, throat irritation and sometimes fever.

But there may also be some changes in symptoms.

1. Laryngitis
Laryngitis means inflammation of the larynx.

2. Pharyngitis
Pharyngitis is inflammation in the back of the throat, known as the pharynx. You will often have more pain and may have swollen painful glands.

3. Tonsillitis
Tonsillitis, which is probably the most well-known, is the inflammation of the tonsils.

But your sore throat can also be caused by bacteria, as well as environmental irritants like smoke and dry air, or overuse of your vocal cords. How you treat a sore throat often depends more on the cause than the location of the inflammation.

Jacquie suggested the following ways to treat a sore throat caused by a virus:

Drinking fluids (two to three liters a day) and staying hydrated - but avoid hot fluids as they can make it worse.

Eating soft foods to reduce discomfort

Simple pain relievers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain and fever

Gargle with salt water

Taking aspirin if you are at least 16 years old and have no allergies

If your sore throat has been confirmed to be caused by bacteria, then you may need antibiotics to treat it.

According to the doctor, in any case, you should see your doctor for the correct diagnosis and receiving the appropriate treatment./ CNA
