"There are no shortcuts to integration"/ Commissioner Kos: We need

European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated today that the European integration process of the Western Balkans has no shortcuts, but requires leaders who put reforms above the politics of the day.

In her speech at the Bled forum in Slovenia, Kos said that the geopolitical situation has changed and in this situation, priority should be given to reforms, the rule of law, and a free media.

"This process cannot be successful if we do not have leaders who believe for themselves that this institution is the best thing. We need leaders who put reforms above everyday affairs, who know how to resolve bilateral issues and thirdly, leaders who believe that it is their duty to push the citizens of their countries to this point. Membership is not only about what we do in Brussels, it is also about the fact that the public supports it. There are no shortcuts, you spoke about Borrell's commitment, while you told him that in 2030 both sides must be ready, the candidate countries and us. In order for us to be able to accept these countries, they must implement reforms, the rule of law, free media are non-negotiable. Geopolitics has changed, we are faced with the fact that there are external disruptive forces as I define them that want to see us fail. Now we have external forces that want us as Europe to fail, we have important elections in Moldova. Russia is trying hard to fight against the current government," Kos said./ CNA
