Waste management will be carried out in 10 areas/ Kumbaro presents the new plan

The Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mirela Kumbaro, present at the Integrated Waste Treatment Reform activity, said that there are currently 7 landfills, but that they are not enough.

The Minister announced that waste management will be carried out in 10 different areas.

Kumbaro presented the waste treatment strategy and announced harsh sanctions.

" Expansion of existing landfills, construction of new landfills, closure of uncontrolled landfills in all areas. Toughening of sanctions. It is important that businesses have a legal obligation to burn and track any waste generated by them. What adds to the challenge is the increase in tourist flows. It is not the same thing to manage the waste of 2.5 million inhabitants and the waste of 15 million inhabitants and this remains a difficulty for municipalities, especially for small municipalities. If we mention small municipalities, the Municipality of Përmet and Gjirokastra, it is not possible for the heads of these municipalities to cope with their income alone.

In 2013, 51% of the waste generated by families and businesses was collected in the territory. In 2020 we are at 87% and in 2024 we reached 98% of waste collection. In 2013 we had only one landfill, today we have 7 such but these are not enough, taking into account the relief which makes the exercise difficult for municipalities like the municipality of Tropoja which has a very difficult territory and the waste we see on the surface of Lake Koman, is not waste thrown into the lake but from various mountain villages that fail to be collected and go to a final point , "said Kumbaro./ CNA
