"Patronageists have lost control of the situation"/ Bylykbashi:

The Vice President of the Democratic Party, Oerd Bylykbashi, described the participation of the Diaspora in the elections of May 11 as the fulfillment of a gigantic reform. Bylykbashi, invited to the "Task Force", emphasized that the high number of registered voters from the Diaspora has caused the SP patrons to lose control of the situation as they did not expect such a high participation from emigrants outside the borders of Albania.

"We are facing an extraordinary reform that has occurred in the electoral process in Albania. Up to this stage, we have made the right to vote outside Albania a reality, it is more than the vote of the diaspora. We have made a gigantic reform a reality.

We have always said that the turnout in the elections was below 50%, which did not reflect the vote of immigrants. What we believe is that what has happened from January 11 to today, according to the CEC, is beyond any prediction of the SP. It was counting on a smaller number and has gone beyond the control of the patronage system, as it had counted on less.

With the pace of applications being made and admissions, which are still under review, about 15 thousand, it will rightly lead to 250 thousand. We are before the explosion of the SP patronage scheme, as it is a very large figure. For each district, we have a figure that affects 2 mandates for each district. There is an element of unpredictability in these elections, to make them intriguing for voters.

What we see with insistence from the SP, refusal. It took time to reach agreement on the rules. The SP demanded that only those with valid documents have the right to register, but as long as the law prevented those with expired documents from voting, then it was agreed that they should register and not vote. This was the first victory for us.

The Himara case was fresh last summer. In 2021-2023, it was forced to extend the deadline for expired documents, why not this time? The SP, knowing the past practice, did not take steps to change this practice, it did not want them to register and vote.

The number of people who had expired documents and could register is low. The SP understands very well that registering and not voting is low. The adoption of normative acts with great delay has had an impact.

"We can exceed the trend to 270 thousand. It happened that the SP again rejected the amendment for voting by immigrants with documents from other countries, they rejected it because they had not included them in the patronage table," said Bylykbashi. /CNA
