Prime Minister Edi Rama, in the hearing held with the residents of Unit 5 in Tirana, also spoke about the arrest of Erion Veliaj and the decision of the Constitutional Court.
Referring to the Constitutional Court's decision to leave Veliaj in office, Rama said that the Constitution, in the event of absence from office, provides for two different things for the MP and the local elected official.
Regarding local elected officials, Rama said that the Constitution does not specify whether absences must be with or without reason.
Further, the Prime Minister said that the government is supporting the municipality to do its best for the budget.
" The mayor should have conducted the hearings for the municipality. Meanwhile, we have the mayor in prison without trial. Meanwhile, we are in a paradox. When the mayor was taken and dragged to be put in a cell as a pre-emptive strike, I said that this is disproportionate. Every person in Albania in any position, if he needs to be investigated, he needs to be investigated, but until the court finds him guilty, he is innocent. But it is not discussed that if a person is finally brought to justice and then all kinds of hyenas and media and political clowns are released, then public punishment occurs, and then the rest. Seeing that all levels of the court did not remove the mayor from his duty, we thought that Tirana has no reason to pay for the lack of leadership. Those who are in office are doing their best, but it is not the same thing. We thought about this in full respect according to the law, according to us. That the Constitution says two different things about the deputy in absentia without reason and the local leader. For the local elected official, it does not says without reason. The Constitutional Court came up with a different decision than ours, I have no reason to doubt it. Now we have to choose, because they have said that the mayor is unable to exercise his duty, but elections cannot be held. Then give him the opportunity to exercise his duty. All those who are in this city, the city must function, the budget must be made available normally. For this reason, we are supporting the municipality to do its best for the budget and for this reason, we thought with Ogerta as the political leader of the region, but also as a member of parliament for Tirana, to continue communicating in these hearings , "said Rama.
