Buquicchio: 34 years of cooperation between the Venice Commission and Albania

The Special Representative of the Venice Commission, Gianni Buquicchio, was present at the conference "30 years of partnership and progress: Albania, the Council of Europe and the Venice Commission".

In his speech, Gianni Buquicchio stated that the cooperation between Albania and the Venice Commission began 34 years ago, before the country joined the Commission.

Further, Buquicchio recalled his first meetings with Albanian institutions and his visit to Albania, as well as a cooperation project launched in the 1990s.

A project that the representative of the Venice Commission said was challenging. But despite the challenges, said Buquicchio, the result was the adoption of the Constitution of Albania, which continues to be in force, without fundamental changes.

" 34 years of cooperation between the Venice Commission and Albania, because the cooperation began before the country's accession. When I was young, Albania was a mysterious place for me. Trespassing on your own country's soil was a mystery.

Cooperation with Albania usually includes aspects of constitutional law. We started the cooperation with the Speaker of Parliament Kastriot Islami. The Venice Commission was also involved in a specific cooperation project in the early 1990s. It was also challenging in terms of logistics. Ultimately and despite all the difficulties, the cooperation between the Venice Commission and Albania led to the adoption of the Constitution, which is still in force without fundamental changes ,” said Buquicchio./CNA
