"9.3 million m² of uninhabited apartments"/ Xhaferri: Alarming

Democratic MP Besart Xhaferri reacted today regarding uninhabited housing in various areas of the country and Prime Minister Edi Rama's statements on this issue.

Through a post on social media, Xhaferri states that the figure of 9.3 million square meters is high and shows that Albanians are no longer buying property.

Xhaferri adds that this situation has fueled an unprecedented housing crisis.

"9.3 million m² of uninhabited apartments. Chief speculator Rama invited Albanians in exile to buy properties to launder criminal money."

At a time when the US State Department continues to raise the alarm about drug money laundering in construction, the government has officially admitted that Albania currently has 27.5 million square meters of uninhabited buildings.

The data has been made public in the National Building Renovation Plan.

But, in addition to detached houses in the countryside, Albania has a large stock of uninhabited housing in the multi-apartment building category, where according to data, there are currently 9.63 million square meters uninhabited in the multi-apartment building category.

Parallel to this figure, which is alarming for the country's economy, is the fact that young Albanians are no longer buying property nor are they choosing to live in a rental, but have fled the country.

This figure proves once again that money laundering in construction was a government project, which has fueled an unprecedented housing crisis.

"Hundreds of people poured their life savings into projects in Tirana and on the coast, but with their hard-earned money, drug cartels' money was laundered," Xhaferri writes./ CNA
