Israel-Gaza conflict/ Ditmir Bushati and Ambassador Djerejian: The sustainable

Former Minister Ditmir Bushati discussed on the "Public Square" podcast with renowned Ambassador Edward Djerejian the recent ceasefire agreement in Gaza, brokered by US President Donald Trump.

During the discussion, it was emphasized that this plan remains fragile, but has the potential to be implemented if there is sustained political will.

According to the ambassador, the key points of the agreement include ending the two-year war, releasing Palestinian hostages and prisoners, and launching a broad humanitarian and infrastructural reconstruction process in Gaza, which requires over 600 aid trucks per day and major international investments. Djerejian emphasized that the disarmament of Hamas, the withdrawal of Israeli troops, and the establishment of a Palestinian transitional government are major challenges to peace.

Regarding the guarantees of this ceasefire, Ambassador Djerejian noted that there are no real guarantees, but emphasized the irreplaceable role of the US in leading the international coalition that includes European and Arab states.

Djerejian warned that a lasting solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict can only come through the principle of land for peace and mutual recognition of states, emphasizing that without new political leadership on both sides, the process remains unfinished.

"The war in Gaza has changed the geopolitical balance of the Middle East, but everything will depend on the willingness of leaders to bring about a true and lasting peace," Djerejian concluded.

Ambassador Djerejian has served eight U.S. administrations in several key roles, including ambassador to Israel and Syria. He has also served under eight different presidents and administrations. He is currently a Senior Fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. /CNA
