10 open questions about the European Union

Integration expert Ilda Zhulali has reacted to the statements of Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos, who stated that the May 11 elections were free and fair.

Zhulali has raised 10 public questions about the European Union:

1. When Commissioner Kos states that the elections in Albania were "free and fair", which of the 46 pages of the final report, or the 13 pages of the OSCE/ODIHR preliminary report, is she referring to?

2. Is the OSCE/ODIHR report, co-authored by observers from your European Parliament, less valid than the Commissioner's personal assessment?

3. Who actually represents the official position of the European Union on the elections - the report of the OSCE/ODIHR and the European Parliament observer delegation, or the statement of Commissioner Kos?

4. Can elections be called "fair" in a country where, according to the OSCE/ODIHR, "the playing field was uneven," "the state and the party have become one," and "organized crime" influences the electoral process?

5. If not, then who is lying? OSCE/ODIHR and the European Parliament, or Commissioner Kos?

6. Doesn't this statement mislead public opinion and give false legitimacy to a system affected by state capture, corruption, and organized crime?

7. In whose name do you alienate the observations and reports of your institutions?

9. Is this a compromise that for the integration process, the political "stability" of some people in power weighs more than the fundamental principles of the European Union?

8. Do you understand that, by giving such contradictory messages, you undermine your credibility in the eyes of Albanian citizens?

10. Will you follow up with concrete actions and official clarifications this open disagreement between your institutions, or will it be left to rot in silence as a "misunderstanding"?

Ps: is it too much to claim electoral standards like those of Kosovo or Macedonia, or should we just be happy with the fact that this statement was not made during the inauguration ceremony of the imaginary bridges leading to the Llogara tunnel?/ CNA
