Salvador Dali's Lost Painting: From Hiding in a Garage to Auctioning for

Two years ago, a strange watercolour hidden in a London garage turned up at a house sale in Cambridge. It sold for just £150 (€173).

Now, the same artwork, a rare original by none other than the surrealist icon Salvador Dalí, obsessed with lobsters and with a twirling moustache, is set to sell for up to £30,000 (€34,700) at auction this October.

The painting in question, titled "Vecchio Sultano (1966)", depicts a royal sultan with a turban adorned with precious stones, inspired by the tales of the "Arabian Nights".

Watercolor by Salvador Dali, 1966

Measuring 15 by 11 inches and created using watercolor and gold-tipped pen, the work is a far cry from Dali's melting clocks or dreamy landscapes. But it has been authenticated by leading Dali expert Nicolas Descharnes and will be auctioned at Cheffins' Art and Design Sale in Cambridge.

The painting's origins date back to 1963, when wealthy Italian clients Giuseppe and Mara Albaretto commissioned Dali to illustrate a Bible, but the painter had another idea.

The watercolor will be auctioned at the Cheffins Art and Design sale in Cambridge on October 23. /CNA
