A few days ago, when it was learned that US President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of US submarines near Russia, the power of the Ohio-class SSBN was re-emphasized.

The Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarines comprise the United States Navy's 14 SSBN ballistic missile submarines and its 4 SSGN cruise missile submarines. Each displacing 18,750 tons underwater, the Ohio-class ships are the largest submarines ever built for the US Navy and are capable of carrying 24 Trident II missiles each.

They are also the third largest submarines ever built, after the Russian Navy's 48,000-ton Typhoon class of Soviet-era submarines, the last of which was retired in 2023, and the 24,000-ton Borei class.

Like their predecessors, the Benjamin Franklin and Lafayette classes, Ohio-class SSBN submarines are part of the United States nuclear triad, along with the U.S. Air Force's strategic bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Together, the 14 SSBNs carry about half of the United States' active strategic thermonuclear warheads. Although Trident missiles do not have pre-assigned targets when the submarines go on patrol, 392 they can be assigned targets quickly by the United States Strategic Command based in Nebraska using secure and continuous radio communications links, including very low frequency systems.

All Ohio-class submarines, except for the USS Henry M. Jackson, are named after U.S. states, which U.S. Navy tradition had previously reserved for battleships and later for cruisers. The Ohio class will be gradually replaced by the Columbia class starting in 2031. /CNA
