A large Roman-era settlement has been discovered in England

Archaeological excavations have uncovered a large settlement dating from the Early Iron Age to the first and second centuries AD during the Roman period.

What started as an extremely rare discovery of two Roman swords by a metal detector has led to a major discovery of Early Iron Age to Medieval artifacts in the Cotswolds in southwest England.

The site near Willersey, funded by Historic England and run in conjunction with Cotswold Archaeology, suggests possible evidence of a Roman villa, which may also have had a pair of side wings, one at each end of a central range.

The excavations follow the discovery of two iron Roman cavalry swords, which probably show traces of their scabbards, during a metal detector gathering in the northern Cotswolds in March 2023./CNA
