A work depicting Venice by 18th-century Italian painter Canaletto has set a new auction record for the artist, selling for 32.6 million euros at Christie's in London.
Titled 'Venice, The Return of Bucintoro on Ascension Day', painted around 1732 and once owned by Britain's first prime minister, Robert Walpole, the work surpassed its estimate of $20 million.
Measuring 86 x 138 cm, it is the largest work by Canaletto to come to market in two decades and was purchased by a telephone bidder through Christie's director Alice de Roquemaurel.
The painting was last sold at auction in 1993 for 66 million French francs (, setting a record in France. Its companion work was sold at Sotheby's in 2005 for 22 million euros, the previous record for a work by Canaletto./CNA
