The beautiful but forgotten European airport, frozen in time

Walking into Budapest's Budaörs Airport feels more like entering a time capsule than an airport.

Located on the edge of Budapest's District XI, Budaörs was the country's first international airport and has been in continuous operation since 1937.

Now its airfield buzzes with the sound of small planes, private jets and helicopters taking off every day.

The elegant Bauhaus terminal, born from a 1930s design competition won by architects Virgil Bierbauer and László Králik, is now a protected building.

The space of this airport has remained largely unchanged for almost 90 years.

A landmark in Hungary's aviation history, Budaörs was once home to Europe's largest hangar.

The airport's location, close to the city center and a railway line, made it an ideal choice, until one day the situation became more dire.

As the demand for air travel increased, Budaörs had no room to develop with the changing times.

After World War II, international traffic moved to a new facility now known as Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. But Budaörs didn't fade into obscurity. On the contrary, it evolved.

Beyond its fleet of modern aircraft, Budaörs Airport is also home to something rarer: works of aviation history.

Some incredible old planes are parked in the hangar next to modern small planes and helicopters.

The Goldtimer Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving old aircraft in flying condition, maintains these historic flying machines./ CNA
