The official theme for World Bicycle Day 2025 is 'Cycling for a Sustainable Future', highlighting the importance of bicycles in encouraging healthier habits, reducing carbon emissions and promoting a more sustainable planet. The initiative encourages communities and authorities to improve cycling as a safer and more accessible option for all.

In 2018, a United Nations General Assembly resolution led by the government of Turkmenistan established World Bicycle Day, recognizing "the uniqueness, longevity and importance of the bicycle, a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally friendly means of transport that promotes environmental stewardship and health."

In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed transportation needs and behavior, prompting many cities to rethink their transportation systems. As part of efforts to 'build back better,' cycling is being presented as a healthy, green, and economical transportation alternative.

A new UN General Assembly resolution adopted in 2022 on ‘Integrating the use of bicycles into public transport systems for sustainable development’ reinforces these principles. Through this resolution, governments commit to promoting cycling among all members of society, including people of all ages, urban and rural, and to developing a cycling culture in society.

Goal of the day

The main purpose of World Bicycle Day is to recognize the distinctive, adaptable and environmentally friendly characteristics of the bicycle as a means of transport. The event motivated stakeholders to highlight and increase the use of bicycles as a way to promote sustainable development, improve education, including physical education, for young people, advocate for health, prevent disease, encourage tolerance, understanding and mutual respect, and support social inclusion and a culture of peace.
