Titanic survivor's letter sells for record £300,000

A letter written by a survivor of the Titanic disaster has sold for a record £300,000 at auction.

First-class passenger Colonel Archibald Gracie wrote the book "The Truth About the Titanic," describing his experience of the April 15, 1912, tragedy that claimed 1,500 lives during the ship's voyage to New York.

The postcard is dated April 10, 1912, the day he boarded the ship, and is postmarked Queenstown 3.45pm on April 11 and London on April 12.

It read: "It is a good ship, but I will wait until my travels are over before I pass judgment on her."

The item sold for five times its expected price of £60,000 at Henry Aldridge and Son of Devizes, Wiltshire on Saturday.

It is the highest price ever achieved for a letter written on board the Titanic, auctioneers said.

The auction organizers added that it is impossible to exaggerate the rarity of this item, written by one of the highest-profile survivors, with excellent content and on the rarest medium, a paper postcard. /CNA
