Why is Labor Day celebrated on May 1st?
Labor Day has its origins in the late 19th-century labor movement in the United States, specifically the Haymarket event in Chicago in 1886, where workers rallied for an eight-hour workday. The peaceful protest turned tragic when a bomb exploded during the demonstration, killing several police officers and civilians.
