The oldest in the world/ Melanchthon spherical clock from 1530

Watches developed from clocks in the 15th and 16th centuries. They had to be small enough to be carried around.

From the beginning, two main types of watches emerged; pocket watches and wristwatches.

The first known wristwatch was given to Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1571. But it wasn't until the late 1800s that wristwatches began to be worn by a wider group of people. Until then, wristwatches were simply an odd accessory worn by women.

Men, on the other hand, used pocket watches. As the name suggests, they were worn in the pocket and had a metal chain attached to it. After the military began using wristwatches, pocket watches gradually lost their popularity.

The oldest pocket watch still working is the Melanchthon spherical clock from 1530.

It belonged to Philipp Melanchthon, a colleague of the famous Christian reformer Martin Luther. It has a diameter of 48 mm, operated for 12-16 hours on a single winding, and is engraved in German.

It is not known who made the clock, as there is no sign of a watchmaker. But it is quite clear that it was made in Germany, and the spherical shape indicates that it was most likely made in the city of Nuremberg.

What is known is that it must be incredibly valuable. Perhaps as valuable as the $24 million watch that recently sold at auction? No one knows until it goes on sale./CNA
