Preserved in the freezer for 2,300 years/ Rare tattoos of Siberian woman

A woman buried more than 2,000 years ago in Siberia's icy Altai Mountains has become the unexpected subject of one of the most exciting archaeological tattoo studies in recent years.

"We knew these mummies had tattoos. But some had skin so darkened and wrinkled that the ink was no longer visible to the naked eye. So what we've done is essentially record wavelengths outside of what humans can see, and that reveals these tattoos quite nicely," said Gino Caspari, an archaeologist at the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology and the University of Bern.

Preserved in permafrost and long thought to be art, her body faded or invisible, her intricate tattoos have been brought to light using high-resolution near-infrared imaging, revealing an extraordinary canvas of animals, mythical beasts and ancient art.
