Switzerland takes over OSCE chairmanship for third time

Switzerland today assumed the chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), becoming the first state to lead this organization three times, following its mandates in 1996 and 2014. This chairmanship is part of Switzerland's ongoing commitment to peace, security and stability in Europe and beyond.

For this mandate, Switzerland has set five main priorities: respect for the Helsinki Principles for a sustainable peace; inclusive and multilateral diplomacy; anticipating technological developments for a secure and humane future; democracy, the rule of law and human rights; and the OSCE's ability to act.

"In the face of war in Europe, Switzerland is committed to a just peace in Ukraine, based on international law and the Helsinki principles. We will use our experience in mediation to promote dialogue, trust and security. We understand that despite tensions, the OSCE remains irreplaceable. We will act with the conviction that when diplomacy seems impossible, it becomes more necessary," declared Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, the new OSCE Chairperson-in-Office.

Switzerland will support field operations and election observation missions, ensuring that democracy, the rule of law and human rights remain at the heart of European security.

The Swiss Chairmanship will also focus on direct engagement with key OSCE states and regions, with Minister Cassis visiting several priority areas./ CNA
