Weekend noises in Greece/ 130 thousand illegal fireworks seized

Greek police seized thousands of illegal fireworks in various parts of the country just as doctors were trying to save a teenage boy's fingers after a firework exploded in his hand.

The 15-year-old from the island of Kalymnos in the southeast Aegean was rushed to hospital in Kos and then to Athens, where doctors are trying to ensure he does not lose one or more fingers on his right hand.

Meanwhile, police seized more than 130,000 illegal fireworks, firecrackers and flares in an effort to limit the damage from what has become a Greek custom of setting off thousands of fireworks on holiday weekends.

Residents in the Athens suburb of Neos Kosmos have taken the need to impress a much more dangerous step further, setting off Molotov cocktails instead of the usual fireworks, firecrackers and sparklers, with reports on Sunday morning saying the nighttime noises lasted for more than an hour, terrifying other residents.

In Corinth, police arrested three people, including a 17-year-old boy, on charges of disturbing the peace for setting off powerful fireworks at a local sports field, only to discover an arsenal of explosives during a subsequent search of the suspects' homes./CNA
