Tariff changes/US-China agreement expected within 3 weeks

US President Donald Trump said today that he expects a deal on tariff increases with Beijing within the next three or four weeks.

Trump has repeatedly stated his interest in talking or meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping to ease trade tensions, but the Chinese leader has appeared to resist such moves.

The US president will not authorize White House delegates to engage with Chinese officials in Beijing for a discussion, according to two former senior State Department officials and an industry official, who were granted anonymity to discuss sensitive ongoing discussions.

The Senate has yet to confirm an ambassador to China. Trump has not appointed anyone else to lead talks with Beijing, and the White House is not approaching the Chinese embassy to begin discussions.
