Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a unilateral ceasefire in Russia's war in Ukraine. The decision was made on the occasion of the Orthodox Easter holiday celebrated in both countries.
"Today from 6:00 p.m. until midnight on Sunday, the Russian side declares an Easter ceasefire," Putin said in televised comments while speaking with Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov.
Putin said he assumed Ukraine would follow Russia's example and said Kiev's actions during the ceasefire would show its readiness for a peaceful solution.
But the Russian president also told Gerasimov that troops should be ready to repel any ceasefire violations by Ukraine.
The Russian Defense Ministry posted on Telegram that the ceasefire regime is being introduced for humanitarian purposes and will be respected by the Russian Joint Group of Troops on condition that it is mutually respected by the Kiev regime./CNA
