Shooting reported at Florida State University

A suspect has been arrested and taken into custody after a shooting incident at Florida State University in the United States, where multiple injuries are reported, sources told the Associated Press.

The extent of the injuries sustained by the injured is not clear at this time and there is no additional information about the detained suspect.

At least six people were taken to the hospital, including one in critical condition, a spokesman for Florida regional hospital Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare said. The other patients are in serious condition, he added.

Ambulances, fire engines and patrol vehicles from several law enforcement agencies rushed to the university campus, which is located west of Florida's capital, after the university reported an active shooter on Thursday.

Hundreds of students ran from the student center.

Ryan Cedergren, a 21-year-old student, said he and about 30 other people hid in the bowling alley on the ground floor of the student center after seeing students running from a nearby bar.

"At that moment, it was a matter of survival," he said.

After about 15 minutes of hiding, university police escorted the students out of the center, he said.

Junior Joshua Sirmans, 20, was in the university's main library when, he said, the alarm warning of an active attacker began to sound. Law enforcement officers escorted him and other students out of the library with their hands on their heads, he said.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a post on social media that the Department of Justice is in contact with FBI agents who are at the scene./ REL
