Easter Sunday/ Pope Francis blesses believers in the Vatican, strong messages

Pope Francis has appeared in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican to wish "Happy Easter" to millions of believers.

"Dear brothers and sisters, Happy Easter," were the words of Pope Francis.

His traditional Easter speech was delivered by a clergy member.

His appearance on Easter Sunday was highly anticipated. Last month, he was released from hospital after five weeks of treatment for an infection that led to double pneumonia.

The Pope's Easter blessing was: "There can be no peace without freedom of religion, freedom of thought, freedom of expression and respect for the views of others."

"What a great thirst for death, for murder we see in the many conflicts that have flared up in different parts of the world," the Pope's speech said.

The Pope remembered the people of Gaza, especially its Christian population, as the conflict "causes death and destruction" and creates a "miserable humanitarian situation."

He also called the rise in global anti-Semitism "disturbing."

"I express my closeness to the suffering... of all the Israeli people and the Palestinian people," the message said. "Call for a ceasefire, release the hostages and come to the aid of a starving people who aspire to a peaceful future."

The Pope also encouraged all parties involved in the war in Ukraine to "pursue efforts aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace."/ CNA
