A 2,000-year-old Roman ship is discovered off the coast of Italy

A 2,000-year-old ancient Roman cargo ship has been found off the coast of Civitavecchia with intact cargo, cargo that is believed to have been on the ship before it sank.

The wreck was discovered about 160 meters under the sea near the port city of Civitavecchia, 80 kilometers west of Rome.

Using a remote-controlled robot, the Carabinieri were able to film the wreck and estimate it to be between 20 and 30 meters long.

One of the most surprising things about this finding is the amount of cargo intact. Hundreds of well-preserved and well-sealed amphorae or Roman jugs were documented by Carabinieri cameras.

Similar Roman cargo ships found in the past were up to 60 meters long and had more complex structures, while this latest discovery is of a medium-sized ship of simpler construction.

In 2021, two ancient Roman shipwrecks were discovered off the coast of Sicily. Both of those ships carried large quantities of wine.

According to Italian media, it is assumed that given the size of the ship and its location, it may have originated in Spain./CNA.al
