Germany wants to increase the number of women in the army

Women are underrepresented in the German Bundeswehr. A new package of legal reforms hopes to change that, at a time when Germany aims to strengthen its military capabilities.

Germany will increase the percentage of women in the armed forces. Chancellor Olaf Scholz's cabinet recently approved a number of measures to promote equal opportunities for men and women in the military.

The changes aim to harmonize procedures in the German army, the Bundeswehr, by strengthening equal opportunity laws that apply to all state structures in general. The Bundeswehr needs soldiers to fill its ranks as part of Germany's efforts to strengthen its military capabilities in response to Russia's war in Ukraine.

"Women are still not sufficiently represented in the Bundeswehr," German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit told reporters.

According to the determination made by the government, representation can only be spoken when the percentage of women exceeds 20 percent. The Ministry of Defense aims for women to make up at least half of the army's medical staff.

Financial and social improvements

In order to attract more women to both active and reservist military service, the German government and military are trying to improve not only wages, but also support for childcare or when someone needs to care for the elderly. or sick family members.

According to the German government, the employment of more women in the military also contributes to the United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development. "Empowering women and girls" is one of the pillars of the UN's 2030 agenda.

However, the Bundeswehr's effort to hire more women is not only a matter of equal gender opportunities, but coincides with the new demand for comprehensive improvements in Germany's military capabilities./ DW
