QUINT and the EU: We are concerned with the removal of Klan Kosova's

The embassies of France, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, the United States and the European Union in Kosovo have expressed concern, as they said, deep, with today's decision of the Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Trade (MINT) to confirm suspension of the business license of Klan Kosova television.

"We are, in particular, concerned with the removal of the business license of Klan Kosova with a disproportionate decision, which will have consequences for the plurality of the media in Kosovo", says a joint communiqué of QUINT and the EU late Friday.

On Friday afternoon, MINT rejected Klan Kosova's appeal for the annulment of the suspension of the private television business certificate.

The joint communiqué further states that the removal of the license of any media is "an important step that requires rigorous review", and that freedom of expression and information are essential features of democratic societies.

Foreign embassies in Pristina expect a "fair and transparent" legal process to resolve this issue.

The Commission for the Review of Complaints for Business Registration decided on Friday that the Kosovo Agency for Business Registration (ARBK) had "acted in accordance with the law when it suspended the business certificate of Klan Kosova".

The Commission's decision closes this case within the Ministry, while the complaining party enjoys the right to file a lawsuit in the competent court, MINT announced on Friday.

On June 14, the Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Trade (MINT) filed a criminal complaint against the Trading Company, Klan Kosova.

The criminal complaint was filed with "the claim that in the business certificate, at the change of owners, Pejë - Serbia and Gjakovë - Serbia appear."

On June 21, the ARBK temporarily revoked the June 14 decision to suspend the private television business certificate, before immediately reinstating it on June 22.

The private national television, Klan Kosova, started broadcasting on February 17, 2009./ REL
