USA, 283 square kilometers of clean energy production area

The U.S. Department of Energy announced Friday that it will use a site it used during the Cold War to test nuclear bombs to build the nation's largest solar power park. The agency announced that it will use other areas and lands it owns for clean energy production projects.

The Department of Energy said that about 283 square kilometers of land in five US states will be used for the projects in question, a large part of which has been used for national security purposes. Projects include the production of electricity from nuclear, solar and wind sources.

"Currently, the designated areas are safe and ready for project development," Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said during a meeting at the agency's headquarters in the US capital.

Secretary Granholm introduced the "Cleanup to Clean Energy" plan in efforts to contribute to the achievement of President Joe Biden's goals for clean electricity.

The US government aims for the electricity grid to run on clean energy after 2035. Officials said many of the areas in question already have energy and workforce customers.

The meeting was attended by companies producing renewable energy, nuclear energy, as well as participants with experience in the implementation of projects for clean electric energy, which produce at least 200 megawatts.

Around the 1940s, the US government built complexes to produce plutonium and uranium for nuclear bombs under Project Mabhattan.

The American government has spent billions of dollars to clean up areas where tests were conducted and components for nuclear bombs were built./ VOA
