A woman is executed in Singapore/ She was caught with 30 grams of heroin

Singapore executed a woman on Friday for the first time in almost 20 years.

Sarideëi Djamani, 45 years old, was found guilty of trafficking 30 grams of heroin in 2018.

She is the second person to be executed for drugs in a week after fellow Singaporean Mohd Aziz bin Hussain, and the 15th since March 2022.

The court rejected the appeal against her sentence on October 6 last year.

A petition for a presidential pardon was also unsuccessful.

Local media reported that Saridei testified during her trial that she was stockpiling heroin for personal use during the Islamic fasting month.

Singapore has some of the toughest anti-drug laws in the world, which it says are necessary to protect society.

The law there specifies that the death penalty will be imposed on anyone caught trafficking more than 500g of cannabis or 15g of heroin.

In April, another Singaporean man, Tangaraju Suppiah, was executed for trafficking 1kg of cannabis. Authorities say he coordinated the sale via cellphone.

Authorities argue that strict drug laws help keep Singapore one of the safest countries in the world and that the death penalty for drug offenses enjoys broad public support.
