Germany: More and more refugees of 2015 employed

In a recent study by the Nuremberg-based Institute for Labor Market and Profession, IAB more than half of the refugees who came to Germany in 2015 are currently in employment. According to the analysis, this means 10% more than in 2020. Most of the refugees of 2015 work full time, the study says. Their average monthly salary increased from 1,660 euros in the first two years after arrival to 2,037 euros on average in the sixth year of their stay in Germany. In this regard, the study notes that the integration of women into the labor market moves much more slowly than that of men. These make up 23% of employed refugees.

From the data, it appears that more and more people who arrived as refugees are working in skilled jobs: About a third have been in various educations since coming to Germany and have enrolled in higher education. Less than two-thirds work in a job that requires vocational training or study. However, 41% of refugees are employed below the level of qualifications or jobs they performed before leaving their homeland.

The IBA analyzes relate to the data of 2021. The database is, according to the IBA, the information questionnaire of the Federal Office of Migration (IAB-Bamf-SOEP). This database is developed by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees and the socio-economic panel of the German Institute for Economic Studies./ DW
