Most of the 667 fires that have broken out across Greece in recent weeks have been started "by the hand of man", a senior Greek official has said.
While weather conditions have been different to any other year, with experts calling the first three weeks of July the hottest on record, most of the fires could have been prevented, the government claimed on Friday.
Vasilis Kikilias, the Greek Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, told reporters: "During this time, 667 fires broke out, which is more than 60 fires per day, almost all over the country. Unfortunately, most were ignited by human hands, either through carelessness or criminal intent.”
Meteorologists have never before recorded such record temperatures for such a long period of time in Greece./ CNA.al
