Hepatitis A detected in frozen mountain fruits from Serbia on the German market

The presence of the hepatitis A virus has been detected in frozen mountain fruits originating from Serbia and destined for the German market, according to the official website of the European Rapid Alert System for Food (RASFF).

The warning was issued on July 10, while the samples were taken on May 15 of this year.

The risk is assessed as "serious". Hepatitis A is an inflammation of the liver caused by the hepatitis virus.

This virus is spread primarily when an uninfected (and unvaccinated) person consumes food or water contaminated with the feces of an infected person. The disease is closely linked to unsafe water or food, inadequate sanitation, and poor personal hygiene, according to the World Health Organization.

Unlike hepatitis B and C, hepatitis A does not cause chronic liver disease, but can cause mild to severe symptoms and rarely fulminant hepatitis (acute liver failure), which is often fatal./ Rel
