Deadly clashes in southern Syria: At least 18 people killed

Clashes between Bedouins and local fighters in the town of Sweida in southern Syria have killed at least 18 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Authorities have sent reinforcements in an attempt to calm the situation.

These are the first deadly clashes between the two communities since incidents erupted in April and May, which pitted Syrian security forces against Druze fighters, resulting in dozens of deaths.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 18 people were killed, including 14 Druze and 4 Bedouins.

A Syrian government official, who asked not to be identified, told AFP that authorities had sent forces to the area to reduce tensions.

The Sweida province is home to Syria's largest Druze community.

After the fall of President Bashar al-Assad in December, concerns were raised about the fate of minorities under the new Islamist authorities. /CNA
