Iranian President Pezeshkian injured in airstrike

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was wounded in the leg during an Israeli airstrike last month at a meeting of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, according to an Iranian report.

The attack on the lower floors of a building in western Tehran was carried out on June 16, the Fars news agency, which is affiliated with Iran's powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, reported on Sunday.

The speaker of Iran's parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the head of the judiciary, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i, and other senior officials were in the meeting with Pezeshkian, the report said.

The suspected attack occurred four days after the start of Israel's air campaign against Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Six bombs or rockets hit the building's entry and exit points, apparently in an attempt to prevent those inside from leaving and to prevent air from entering, the report said.

Although the building's power was cut, officials managed to escape through an emergency hatch, according to the report, which claimed that Pezeshkian and several others suffered leg injuries as they fled.

Last week, Pezeshkian accused Israel of trying to kill him, telling conservative American commentator Tucker Carlson in an interview that he was at a meeting and "thanks to intelligence from the spies they had, they tried to bomb the area where we were holding that meeting."

Fars noted that the apparently accurate information Israel had in planning and carrying out the attack has prompted Iranian authorities to investigate whether the Israelis had inside information.

The report did not say where the attack took place. Iran International media outlet reported on June 16 that an Israeli strike had hit an area near Shahrak-e Gharb in western Tehran.

Last week, IRGC General Mohsen Rezaei told state media that Israel bombed the site where a meeting of the Supreme National Security Council was being held, but none of its members were injured, Iran International reported.
