North Korea reaffirms support for Russia's war in Ukraine

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has offered Moscow "unwavering support" in its war in Ukraine, according to state media reports.

In talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in North Korea, Kim said Pyongyang is aligned with "all actions of the Russian leadership" to combat "the root cause of the Ukrainian crisis."

Western officials believe Pyongyang sent about 11,000 military troops to Russia last year to fight against Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale war in Ukraine in February 2022.

According to North Korea's state news agency, KCNA, Kim and Lavrov met on Saturday "in a warm friendly atmosphere."

The North Korean leader expressed "full confidence that the Russian army and people will achieve this goal of protecting the dignity and basic interests of the state."

On Telegram, the Russian Foreign Ministry has published a video showing the two officials greeting each other with hugs.

North Korea's reaffirmation of military support for Russia comes as US President Donald Trump has announced the return of military aid to Ukraine, after a short pause.

Trump told NBC television on Thursday that he had made a deal with NATO for the United States to send air defense systems to Ukraine through the alliance.

Trump's announcement came at a time of intensifying Russian airstrikes in Ukraine.

Pyongyang admitted in April this year that it has military troops deployed in Russia, months after the West provided evidence that large numbers of soldiers are on the front lines between Russia and Ukraine.

Kim signed an agreement with Putin in June last year, agreeing to support each other if either country faces "aggression".

In addition to soldiers, North Korea has pledged to send thousands of workers to rebuild Russia's war-torn Kursk region, Moscow's security chief announced last month.

Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia by hitting the country's economy with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ REL
