Threatened investigative journalist Roverto Saviano/ Sentence given to Italian

One of the leaders of the Italian mafia, Francesco Bidognetti, received a one-and-a-half-year prison sentence on appeal today for threatening journalist and anti-mafia writer Roberto Saviano in a Naples court in 2008.

Bidognetti, who had been among the bosses of the 'Campania Camorra' mafia family, whose death threats over Saviano's 2006 exposure, Gomorra, had forced Saviano to put himself under police protection, was re-convicted along with a lawyer for new threats against the writer, as well as new threats against anti-mafia journalist Rosaria Capacchione.

Gomorrah was made into a film in 2008 that won second prize at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, and later spawned an internationally successful television series.

Bidognetti and Casalesi's other bosses are already serving long to life sentences for murder and other mafia crimes.

Saviano, 45, tearfully hugged his lawyer after the sentencing and told reporters that the mafia threat had stolen his life.

"Sixteen years of trial are no victory for anyone. Now we have official evidence in this second trial that the bosses and their lawyers signed an appeal in which they targeted those who reported on the criminal power. And they did not attack politics, but journalism, implying that they would hold journalists - and my name and that of Rosaria Capacchione - responsible for their convictions," Saviano said. /CNA
