Trump says government will ease tensions in Minnesota

President Donald Trump said his administration would "de-escalate tensions" in Minnesota, following the second fatal shooting of a U.S. citizen by federal immigration officers there.

"Ultimately, it was terrible. They were both terrible," he said in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday.

In early January, Renee Good was shot dead by an immigration officer, followed by Alex Pretti, who was killed after being stopped by border agents last weekend. Pretti's death reignited local protests and public outrage across the country, and led to criticism from lawmakers of both parties.

Trump's remarks are the latest sign that his administration is taking a step back from its operations in Minnesota. Speaking to fellow reporters before a rally in Iowa on Tuesday night, Trump said he considered the killing of Pretti, an intensive care nurse at a veterans hospital, "a very unfortunate incident."

Asked by reporters whether he agreed with the characterization of Pratt as a "domestic terrorist," Trump said: "I haven't heard that."

Trump then added: “He shouldn’t have been carrying a gun.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said immediately after the shooting that Pretti "was not there to peacefully protest, but to perpetuate violence" and accused him of "domestic terrorism."

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has also said that the agents fired in self-defense after Pretti resisted attempts to disarm him.

Noem said Pretti was shot because he was “brandishing” a gun during a confrontation. However, eyewitnesses and local officials have disputed this account, saying he was holding a phone in his hand, not a gun.
