"The Economist": How the Venezuelan president was captured, details

The Economist

The United States announced that it has captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro after an overnight military operation in Caracas. The announcement was made by former US President Donald Trump just hours after explosions were reported in the Venezuelan capital.

According to US statements, the operation began at midnight and ended before dawn, including air strikes and a special forces operation. Maduro and his wife have reportedly been taken out of the country. This development represents an unprecedented escalation of US pressure on the Venezuelan regime.

Images of explosions near strategic facilities were posted on social media, including the Tiuna military base in Caracas, the port of La Guaira, and the La Carlota airfield. There were also reports of attacks in Higuerote and the El Volcán communications center. US special forces helicopters were seen operating at very close range, suggesting that Venezuela's air defenses had been neutralized in advance.

The Venezuelan government condemned what it called a "grave military aggression" and called for armed resistance, but gave no information on Maduro's fate. Vice President Delcy Rodríguez demanded proof that he was alive and was expected to take over the country temporarily.

For months, the US had been increasing pressure on Caracas, including naval blockades and attacks on infrastructure linked to oil exports. Maduro, accused by Washington of drug trafficking and rigging the 2024 presidential election, now faces the possibility of a trial in the United States.

Venezuela's political future remains unclear, while international reactions and the consequences of this operation are expected to develop in the coming days./ CNA
