US media: President Trump ordered attacks on Venezuela

President Donald Trump ordered strikes on sites inside Venezuela, including military facilities, US officials told US media, as the administration escalated its campaign against the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

The attacks come after months of US military buildup in the region, with the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford and many other warships positioned in the Caribbean.

In recent weeks, the US has seized two oil tankers near Venezuela, launched deadly attacks on more than 30 ships that the administration says were transporting drugs, and struck what President Trump called a port area where ships are loaded with drugs.

The Trump administration has accused Maduro of drug trafficking and collaboration with gangs designated as terrorist organizations, which Maduro denies.

On Christmas Eve, Trump declined to say what his goal was, but warned that if Maduro plays tough, it will be the last time he will be able to play tough.

Maduro said this week that he is open to talks with the US on issues of drug trafficking, oil and migration wherever they want, whenever they want. /CNA
