German Christian Social Party calls for return of most Syrian refugees

A document from the German Christian Social Union (CSU) ahead of a state group meeting in Seeon, Upper Bavaria on January 6th talks about a "return offensive" that should be carried out "as soon as possible."

For most Syrians with temporary residence permits, the defense argument is no longer valid after the end of the civil war, the document says.

"For those who do not leave voluntarily, deportations should begin as soon as possible." The CSU document was reported by the German newspaper "Münchner Merkur" and dpa.

2026 should be the year of the deportation offensive, "with planned flights also to Syria and Afghanistan." To this end, return centers should be set up throughout Germany, along with a dedicated deportation terminal at Munich Airport.

The CSU also wants to take a tougher stance on refugees from Ukraine. "Furthermore, we will insist that Ukrainian men of military age, in particular, contribute to the defense of their country," the document says, without giving further details.

Higher barriers to integration into social systems

Another point in the CSU document is the difficulty of the criteria for entering the German social system. "Currently, EU citizens are guaranteed freedom of movement within the Union by law, even with a minimum weekly working time of 5.5 hours. We want to narrow the definition of the concept of 'worker' as defined in the EU Directive on Freedom of Movement," the statement explains. The head of the regional group Alexander Hoffmann told "Merkur" that "labor migration to Germany should not be poverty migration."

The preliminary document published in the media also contains other points such as combating the enemies of democracy. It demands that public calls for the establishment of an Islamist state, the Caliphate, be condemned.

"Requests for the overthrow of the basic liberal democratic order or an anti-Semitic crime should lead to the mandatory expulsion of the person concerned, the denial of a residence permit and, in the case of dual citizens, the loss of German citizenship," the CSU document states. /DW
